The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt
This book is mostly about a boy named Holling Hoodhood who has to stay at school every Wednesday with his homeroom teacher Mrs. Baker, who has a husband in the military. At the beginning of the book, Holling thinks that Mrs. Baker hates his guts. But towards the end of the book, he finds out that Mrs. Baker doesn't hat his guts. She really likes Holling. Holling and the class learn a lot because Mrs. Baker teaches English and sentence diagramming to the 7th graders. I think this book got the Newbery Award because it is so inspiring to all who read it.

Margaret, what a nice choice to read! This book is a great example of how easy it is to misjudge a person. Mrs. Baker turns out to be very different than Holling thought on the first day of school.
