Call in Courage by Sperry Armstrong
This book is about a boy named Mafatu who lives on an island with a tribe. Everybody says that he is a coward because he is afraid of the sea. But then one night he heard some people talking about him, so he took a canoe and sailed off into the ocean to prove he was not afraid. Then he gets stranded on another island and stays there for awhile to show he is brave. Then he sails back to his homeland. I think this book won the Newbery Medal because it is full of adventure.

Mafatu did a good job of proving his bravery. I think I would have been scared if I were him. Do you think his father was proud of him?
