The Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt
A Presbyterian boy , Holling Hoodbood has just started 7th grade attending Camillo Junior High. Holling knows his teacher, Mrs. Baker is out to get him some how. I mean, is there any other reason why she would make him read Shakespeare outside of class? His 7th grade school year starts in 1967 when everybody in his school has bigger things to worry about than getting cream puffs to avoid being dead meat. Like the war that's going on in Vietnam. Holling's father could care less about everything in the world. All he cares about is the Hoodbood's family business and its success. Can Holling stay out of trouble with Mrs. Baker as his teacher? I think this book deserves the Newbery honor because of its humor and suspense. This book is full of humor. Even Holling's name is funny. Think about it Holling Hoodbood, now that is hysterical. In this book, you never know what's going to happen next. For instance one moment Holling is about to be beat to a prune and the next he's saved! This book is amazing!
